About the Åland Islands
The Åland Islands form an archipelago at the mouth of Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. Although an autonomous region of Finland, the islands are demilitarised and the principal language is Swedish. Fasta Åland is the principal island and is home to 90% of the total population, estimated to be approximately 28,000.
The administrative capital is Mariehamm, served by regular ferry sailings to Helsinki, Turku (Finland), Stockholm, Kapellskär (Sweden) and Tallinn. Many ferry services operating between Turku & Stockholm also call at the Åland port of Långnäs, which allows for the continued sale of Duty Free goods onboard the ships.
The Åland Islands benefit from regular ferry services operated by Tallink Silja Line and Viking Line to Helsinki, Stockholm and Tallinn. Most ferries carry a combination of both tourist and freight traffic.
