About Belgium
Belgium has a population of about 11,000,000 and covers approximately 30,000 square kilometres. The country shares land borders with France to the west, with Luxembourg to the south and with Germany and the Netherlands to the east. Unusually, Belgium's capital city Brussels is neither located on the coast nor on a natural waterway. Brussels is home to the headquarters of the European Union.
Although Belgium's second city Antwerp is a huge shipping port, the principal ferry ports are located at Ostend and Zeebrugge. Zeebrugge sees regular services across the North Sea to the English ports of Hull, Purfleet, Killingholme and Portsmouth, to the Spanish port of Bilbao and to the Scottish port of Rosyth, located in the shadow of the famous Forth Railway Bridge. These ferries carry a combination of both tourist and freight traffic.
