About Greece
Located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Greece is officially called the Hellenic Republic. For a relatively small country, at 132,000 square kilometres, Greece has the 12th longest coastline in the world. This is due to the indented coastline and to the many islands, including the Dodecanese and Cyclades and the Aegean and Ionian Islands.
Greece shares land borders with Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the north-east. At just short of 11,000,000 the population is largely confined to the coastal areas of this mountainous country.
There are regular ferry services from the Greek ports of Igoumenitsa and Patras to the Italian ports of Venice, Ancona and Bari. Modern and well equipped vessels ply these routes, with all ferries carrying a combination of both tourist and freight traffic.
