Vans - Do I need to travel as freight?
With Stena Line, all private use vans exceeding 6.0m in length must be booked as freight. If commercial goods are being carried you must book as freight, regardless of the length. If your van is under 6.0m and you are not carrying commercial goods, please visit our passenger website's Stena Line Ferries page.
Recent Changes
Superfast VII and Superfast VIII will replace the three existing vessels serving the Scotland - Northern Ireland service in November 2011. At over 30,000 tons these will be the largest ships to have ever served the route and will offer a crossing time of 2hrs 15mins. Coinciding with this will be a switch of services from Stranraer to Cairnryan.
Stena Line has now received regulatory approval to take over the Irish Sea routes formerly operated by DFDS Seaways. This means that Stena Line is operating services between Liverpool (Birkenhead) & Belfast and Heysham & Belfast.
About Stena Line
Stena Line is one of the world's leading ferry operators and has an extensive network of services between the mainland of the United Kingdom and both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and also across the North Sea into Holland and Denmark.
A conventional vessel and a high speed craft operate between Cairnryan & Belfast with up to seven departures in each direction. The crossing time for Stena Navigator and Stena Caledonia is 3hrs 50mins whilst the high speed Stena Voyager can complete the passage in two hours (although freight is limited on HSS services).
There are up to four return sailings per day between Holyhead & Dublin, Stena Nordica and Stena Adventurer taking 3hrs 15mins to complete the crossing. A double daily service is handled by Stena Europe on the link between Fishguard & Rosslare with a crossing time of 3hrs 30mins.
The North Sea route between Harwich & Hook of Holland is served with two departures daily operated by the 62,000 ton twins Stena Britannica and Stena Hollandica, both constructed in 2010. The crossing time is seven hours.
The other North Sea routes are all freight only services. The Harwich - Rotterdam link operates 10 departures per week in each direction with a crossing time of eight hours. Between Killingholme and Hook of Holland there is an overnight service daily, taking 11 hours to complete the crossing.
