Free Port of Ventspils is one of the largest ports in the Baltic Sea region. The port is a deepwater port, which is ice-free the whole year round.The terminals located in the port handle different type of cargoes such as oil products, grain, coal and juice concentrates.

In 2000 a new multi-purpose Ro-Ro and container terminal was launched. Today contanier vessels from Ventspils travel to the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Sweden and Russia. The two regularly scheduled Ro-Pax ferry lines operate from Ventspils to Nynäshamn in Sweden and Travemünde in Germany.
