About Northern Ireland
The island of Ireland lies to the west of Great Britain, separated by the Irish Sea. The island is divided between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland, the former covering less than 20% of the island. Northern Ireland is one of the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom and shares a land border only with the Republic of Ireland. The capital city is Belfast.
Regular ferry services operate into both Belfast and Larne, the latter being located to the north of the capital. There are regular freight services into Belfast from both Liverpool and Cairnryan. Larne is linked to Scotland by services to Cairnryan and Troon. There is also a summer seasonal link between Belfast and Douglas, Isle of Man, although this fast craft service is unsuitable for larger freight vehicles.
Other than on the service from Liverpool most ferries serving Northern Ireland carry a combination of both tourist and freight traffic but some high speed craft carry tourist vehicles and small freight vehicles only.
